out and about: cloak and petal

french 75

harland brewing: hazy ipa

The idea is to do date night, at most 1 x a week. At least 2 x a month.

Now that we both work from home, separately, and that 1/2 of the kids are home. All. The. Time. It’s important to find time out and about. And this was at the crux of our last debate. Do we stick with our tride and true favorites, or, do we try something new.

This week? Trying something new won out.

And our something new? Was venturing down to little italy to check out the sushi at cloak and petal.

And true to our nature, our evening started out at the bar with drinks. French 75 for me. Hazy ipa for jamie.

chicken gyoza: taberu rayu, chies, agedame, and soy rayu vinegar

Okay. Hold up. Seriously?!? One of the best bites we have collectively every had. This was seriously everything. If you get nothing else. Get this. Serious perfection.

shibuya nights: salmon, lemon thins, tempura shrimp, krab, avocado, yuzu kosho tosazu, yuzu honey aioli, katsuobushi and aonori

We asked our server what her favorite roll was. This was it. And oh my goodness. Yes. This was it. This was our favorite roll of the night. Light, fish forward, and fresh tasting. It was just the epitome of eating what you are looking at. So good.

saucy boi: panko shrimp, cream cheese, avocado, spicy tuna, jalapeño, seared spicy aioli, and sweet soy reduction

Here’s the thing. You need to ask yourself before you order this roll… Are you a condiment person? I am, the hubs, not so much. But seriously, the whole “saucy boi” not a gimmick. The whole roll is slathered in sauce. Multiple sauce. So much sauces\, that it’s hard to discern some of the other flavors. But in the same breath… all the sauces, and I am so here for them. Because I? Am a sauce junkie.

chef special: scallops

Our server (who remember, directed us to our favorite roll of the night) let us know the chef was serving up a special for the night, and if we liked scallops, we should order it.

Um - have you met me? Scallop enthusiast.

The special was sliced fresh and raw scallops layered between cucumber slices and topped with caviar and onions. Kinda a mashup of all the things you want (see my favorite scallop dish).

notorious p.i.g.: tuna, yellowtail, ume bacon, panko shrimp, krab, avocado, seared garlic aioli, sweet soy reduction, and aonori

Um. I’m sorry. Bacon on sushi? Who does that? Cloak and petal, that’s who. Seriously, a whole roll built around bacon and smokiness. It’s kinda a whole new level of sushi. Totally unexpected, yet makes total sense.

It was a fun date night; but I think it would make an even better spot to return with friends, so you can try even more specialty rolls.
