original 40: shaping reality west coast ipa

It’s beginning to look a lot like summer. Which is a great thing, until the crowds of tourists hit. Then it’s time to wait until local’s summer, when the crowds die down but we still get to enjoy a month or two of sun. For now however, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, do some people watching, and take in a late linner. The afternoon equivalent of brunch, if you will.

One of our favorite spots is on the boardwalk of mission bay, at the catamaran resort. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get some live music to compliment your people watching.

We like the bar menu, and the outdoor patio vibe the best. Although our options have been drastically limited since they started adding pineapple to everything, and I do mean everything.

summer roll: salmon, spicy tuna, pickled strawberry and cucumber, avocado, strawberry sriracha

First up was the summer roll. New to the menu since our last visit, and the combo of strawberry and salmon in a roll intrigued us. I really, really wanted it to work. I mean strawberries and salmon play well together, but something was lacking. Perhaps it was because the salmon was raw? I don’t know, but there was just something off. Did we eat it? Yes. Is it worth a try? Yes. Would I get it a second time? No.

moray’s mai tai: white rum, Luxardo Apricot, pineapple, orange, lime, grenadine & dark rum float

I’d like to start by pointing out that a traditional mai tai does not include pineapple. And thankfully, the people at moray’s have no problem leaving it out of the drink for me. No prebatched cocktails here. And the mai tai’s are delicious. They actually have two mai tais on the menu - the other is a barrel aged traditional… not a pineapple to be seen. I just happen to really love the moray’s from way back when I used to be able to have pineapple. It takes me back to the luau we attended when celebrating my 40th.

katsu chicken sandwich: crispy fried chicken breast, chili crisp bacon jam, pickled slaw, mayo, brioche, mac salad or fries

Now this? Was one heck of a bite. Super crispy chicken, great katsu flavor, the pickled slaw added just the right tang, the chili crisp bacon jam perfection. And don’t get me started on the mac salad. Totally hawaiian traditional, down to the shaved carrot.

This is a not to be slept on bite. Yum!
