out and about: the fishery

miso kanpachi: radish, chives, ginger-scallion

Baby, we’re back.

My most favorite restaurants all have one thing in common… they cook seasonally. Which means the menus are constantly changing to reflect local food trends.

Sometimes its reworking favorites with different flavors, sometimes it’s entirely new menu items. Either way, I love always being exposed to new things.

So here we are again at the fishery, trying some new dishes, and a new/old favorite. Get used to it. We’re here a lot.

Up first was the miso kanpachi (amberjack). It was delicious. We both loved it, and the hubs isn’t the hugest miso fan. The radishes brought the perfect crunch, the cilantro brought the fresh, and the ginger-scallion sauce brought it all home. Definitely going back for this one.

nori tacos: sushi rice, scallion, smoked shoyu salt

Next up were the nori tacos. I am so so glad to see these on the menu. For a while they were only a random appetizer, and you had to luck out to get them. Now, not only are they on the menu, but the fish changes depending on what’s fresh and available. We were lucky enough to get scallops. I love, love, love a good raw scallop. And these? Were good raw scallops, perfectly enhanced by the smoked shoyu salt.

poke roll: shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber top: spicy tuna, sesame ponzu, crispy potato

So yes, we’ve had this one before. And before this, the fishery roll was our go-to shared sushi roll. But we loved the poke roll the last time we got it (it was our first time); and this time, we wanted it again. It’s just got all the best things. And it’s totally worth a repeat.

And now, for the best part? Who doesn’t love a secret menu? Or a not-so-secret menu item? This is that. Trust me… just ask for the clam chowder fries. It’s nowhere on the menu, but it’s there. And they know it.

We took a trip up the coast with the kiddos several years ago, and one of the restaurants we ate at, in Santa Barbara, had chowder fries on the menu. You know me… I had to try. And I was obsessed. And have been obsessed ever since.

So, when I heard about the secret fishery menu item, clam chowder fries, that’s an off-menu request, I may have cried happy tears.

You. Need. This.

That is all. We will be back. And you? Need to try all these new(ish) dishes out.
