out and about: pop up bagels
You guys!!! La jolla finally, finally, has opened a bagel shop. It’s been decades since I skipped first period to hit up the bagel shop in the vons parking lot to get a cream cheese cheese melt, and I miss those days.
And I know what you are saying… we have busy bees. And it’s right down the street from you. And yes… there is that - but somehow tat spot has just never hit. At least with any of the locals I know. We all pivoted to einsteins or bruglers in pb.
But not any more. Pop up bagels - the spot known for grabbing, ripping and dipping your bagels without fuss, muss or any unnecessary extras - has quite literally “popped up” in the old breakfast republic location (another spot that didn’t take off the way one would have hoped).
Sporting only five types of bagels (plain, salt, sesame, poppy, and everything) and a rotating roster of butter and cream cheese- both with a who’s who line-up of fun mix-ins (think grillos pickles and sabatino truffles). You can however add salmon, because what self respecting bagel place wouldn’t?
The bagels were warm and fresh - my personal favorite? The salt. The kids loved all of the rest of them. Loved tearing and dipping and just enjoying a bagel for what it is supposed to be.
We tried the always available scallion cream cheese - which was excellent - and the guest truffle cream cheese. Both were amazing. 10 out of 10 I would do again.
The bagels tend to get a little hard after sitting, so be sure to consume immediately, or store in a ziplock if you don’t plan on eating right away.
